Duration controls work differently depending on the type of media you're working with.
Video and audio clips
You can't extend a video or audio clip beyond its original length. You can trim it shorter by dragging the layer edge to the left in the timeline.
Images, text, and captions
These can be extended or shortened freely. Drag either edge of the layer in the timeline to set the duration you want.
